Digging basements is really expensive!

What are your feeling concerning Lemmy today?
I like it a lot. I come here often, it's a good addition to my reddit use, it has some nice people and some interesting content. I love that it is decentralized, which means that there will always be a server without ads, tracking or bad governance. Also it feels like being part of Lemmy is being part of something new and novel. The idea of decentralizing services online, away from corporate silos, should be resurrected.

They will be freed from the eternal greed that will always cloud the judgement of big corporations. I don't even think there's a lot wrong with this advertising, but there is a lot wrong with having this advertising while not allowing content creators more leeway.

digital voting has major drawbacks over traditional voting.

Dutch government requires you to use Android or iOS to use digital infrastructure
>Dutch digital identity verification system DigiD has announced the phasing out SMS as second factor. That way they require citizens to install a smartphone app in order to use digital services from the government, municipalities, the health sector and others. These applications only work on iOS and Android phones, with reliance on third party services.

Interesting episode about one of the Jan 6 rioters.

The system doesn't work, these people need to be tried in court. But they're rich unfortunately.

I don’t think that’s possible, but you could just commit to using one instance?

Great question, keeping up with what is political correct is very difficult and it’s easy to get cancelled.

It’s not really though. As long as you’re open to understand a good argument against a habit that you learned earlier and you’re a respectful person, you shouldn’t have a problem.

Do you know any good .onion links, freenet links or .i2p sites?

How much could a banana cost? $20?

Hey these apps are still new! I have always been the using lemmy through the mobile browser, and it works flawlessly!

That’s weird as hell I’d like to see a follow up on that. What could be the reason?

>You want to know the value of Mastodon over Insta? Posted this on Instagram to the 15k followers I have there, properly tagged. 29 likes, no comments. > >Masto? *So* much engagement. So much fun discussion. So much more community. > >Numbers don't mean squat if you don't have the follow through. I've never sold a single piece of art through Insta. People on Insta like passively browsing through images and tapping the heart. For an artist, it's a useless audience.

It’s a very old machine, often used by enthusiasts, the chances are high that it has gotten upgrades before, no?

The computer might already have an SSD. Do you know how to check?

First make sure that you got compatible memory! Also you could try to find used modules, they are available on craiglist and similar sites.

Learning always is a good idea.

You have two ram slots only. You could do 8 and 4gb but that’s not advised. Better use same amount and also same frequency etc. Did you check out the ifixit link?

I was wrong, it’s even easier than I thought. Here is a step-by-step manual if you like: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Lenovo+ThinkPad+X220+RAM+Replacement/71889

If you have a little bit of skill with a screw driver and basic electronics it’s a good idea. I think it fits two ram sticks, so you could buy two 8gb ones. Or you could buy a second 4gb one for very cheap and end up with 8gb, which is fine still anyways.

Wait what do you do with it on a raspberry pi?

I think it’s a good idea, but only if you already have users or potential users. Otherwise just make a sublemmy on one of the servers and use that.

for this very good effortpost I will award you 1 of my lemmy bucks! Proof will be edited, once the transaction is complete.

Edit: https://feddit.de/post/154711 the transaction has been written in stone on the immutable sub (as long as the mods keep their hands off it)

I don’t care. Make a new sub and make a post that argues for everyone to switch, otherwise it all works fine imo

Well maybe I don’t want to use software that reports to the creators if I saw their posts or not.

I think it’s actually newest communities, in a list.

yes you are 100% correct, sorry. I don’t really know of any system administration tutorials for total beginners. We all learned this organically somehow, how to deal with ssh. We were bloody beginners who did stupid mistakes as well in the past, I used to always break my linux installs :D

hmm. I think that I had syncthing turned off. But that wouldn’t make sense that it would still drain the battery. Weird, maybe it wasn’t syncthing after all

I recently tried it and I am pretty sure that it was a significant drain on my battery. I wasn’t connected to any other devices though, since I only installed the app and then forgot about it. Do you experience the same behavior?

USB cable. If that’s not what you’re looking for, maybe something like Nextcloud?

Maybe you can change it in bios?

https://www.diskpart.com/gpt-mbr/change-legacy-to-uefi-4348i.html

It could be that you need to change the partition on the disk as well, with a special program, like they say in the article above.

Oh I totally believe that in certain subreddits or whatever it’s good to have such a rule. If people still want to figure out the author of a dumb post they might, but only a fraction of them will go and harass them.

But the invasion of Ukraine has potential immediate ramifications for people living in Europe, whether that be through energy security, sanctions, refugees, etc. So it may be selfish, but it’s understandable.

The biggest threat to us is it escalating to nuclear war.

lemmy really is a no-brainer, I wonder why it’s going so slowly

I experience this as well, the drop down menu is unreliable. It’s only been like this since recently though

You already can install Lemmy with yunohost: https://github.com/YunoHost-Apps/lemmy_ynh . The app could use some love though.

Sadly this is how hosting these kinds of services works at the moment. There is no way the devs can change this. If it helps you it’s not actually that hard, like @dessalines@lemmy.ml already said there are many step by step tutorials that will be great introductions into the world of system administration.

How do you sort your timeline?
I mostly show all communities and sort type new, because content is still coming in relatively slowly. There I switch between posts and comments. If you post something on lemmy I'll read it :D

Collapse “Subscribed to communities” list?
Hey I would like it if there was a way to collapse the "Subscribed to communities" list on the main lemmy screen when logged in. This list is very long for me, since our server otherwise wouldn't get all the interesting posts, it's so long that the home website is ridiculously long and I have to scroll endless to reach the info about the server or the modlog at the bottom etc. Any thoughts?

They seem redundant, selfhost seems to have a couple of rules, but they pretty much do the same thing, right? I would prefer if they would be merged, it's confusing and annoying to figure out which of both is bigger, since that's all that matters. Also naming is nearly the same. I just can't see a difference.

a way to search on a server
Hello, I am subscribed to the communities on slrpnk.net, but if I want to find them it's very difficult. I don't remember their names, because they're new. When searching for slrpnk on feddit they don't show up in the search results. I think only the community name before the @ is found in search results, the instance name isn't. This would be fine if there was a way to limit search within a specific instance. It would also be very useful to show communities listed by instance. That way I could find at least a list of the slrpnk communities that feddit is connected to. Also, when looking at the "List of communities" and clicking into the "All" tab, there's a search field as well. When searching here for slrpnk I end up in the same search panel as when searching with the top search function, it can't search for instance names. Here it's very counter-intuitive for it not to work. Anyways, great stuff otherwise, enjoying my time here.
