“The world is already destroyed by a nuclear holocaust, we did it, boys!”

Yeah, I know, I know, also people who are not tech savvy, you change the smallest thing to their GUI and they get lost, you need to do some training stuff.

I agree there are cases where you need specific software and in that cases it might be hard, but also there are a shit ton of other cases where everything you need is simply a word processor and spreadsheet.

I know you can pirate it, I doubt a government will decide to launch a national scale campaign to pirate every machine with Windows, it would probably be easier to install Linux any way since you have a lot of older machines.

How is the government going to handle the use of public computers if Microsoft is getting out of Russia? I mean, I’m sure they already have a lot of pirated copies and old versions of Windows, as any (at least third world) country does, but at some point I don’t see any option to either pirate every copy of Windows or start using Linux.

New rules curtailing their use could hurt service providers such as Baidu, Tencent, and Meituan, which rely on such methods to promote their products and generate profit from advertisements.

Honestly the reason why we get so many children is because there’s poor sexual education and free contraceptives, plus abortion not being legal and also massive propaganda since centuries ago by the church to make people reproduce like rabbits.

If they’re Usonians they’re probably guilty of at least 5 crimes against humanity.

Adding upper case letters to addresses would indeed increase what the “_” does, I don’t think we should add them. Your method also requires manual intervention which is just not a good idea.

The US Authoritarian Regime Bans ‘Fight Club’ Book in Various States

The author also said that he saw the irony in many Americans’ angry response to China’s actions, given that his books are banned in many locations across the U.S.

“What I find really interesting is that my books are heavily banned throughout the U.S.,” he said. “The Texas prison system refuses to carry my books in their libraries. A lot of public schools and most private schools refuse to carry my books. But it’s only an issue once China changes the end of a movie? I’ve been putting up with book banning for a long time.”

If we would follow that line of thought this community would be filled with Usonian shit, world news need to be something involving the world, various countries or something like that, not something that happens in the world because everything can happen in the world.

If you don’t improve material conditions is all theater, though.

While I totally I agree with you this community is not for this kind of stuff, /c/announcements is for Lemmy announcements, read the sidebar please.

I think having more admins from more time zones is the best solution, then e-mail verification and then having to fill out a form because it takes time to be reviewed and it takes more time from me because i have to write shit and anyway i can lie.

It’s all thanks to 4chan and their raids, God bless them. 🙏

It would be nice to modify the front end so that it looks better for that.

IMO it has quite a few native applications which is pretty rare for a distribution of its size, then you have everything flatpak has to offer and you could install any .deb, which is enough for me. Sure, you don’t get as many stuff as the AUR has but Arch is for pros anyway.

Zorin if you come from Windows, elementary if you come from Macintosh.

Ahh, I get your point, I think it could redirect by default to the human readable one but if one where to delete to only the ID should also work. Yeah, I understand the only title based URL part.

I disagree on being nicer, since it makes the URL larger and it does not follow the same pattern as everything else, but let’s agree on disagree on that part.

Well, that is the exact opposite of what OP thinks, since it’s not human meaningful if title is optional. Also I don’t see the reason why /post/ helps with readability more than /p/.

Yeah, that’s also an issue, and sure opt in ads are not that bad since it’s probably one or two clicks away and they’re gone, as long as it doesn’t get like the Android ecosystem where everything you download that’s not from F-droid is basically an ad hell where every part of the GUI is used to display something or pop up something when you’re using it.

I think in an ideal world, the government should have to fund this, to some degree or other, because at the end of the day the world depends on open source software, and the solution is neither to make it closed source or something inherently wrong with open source, it’s just ravaging capitalism. If governments would stop using shitty Windows and pay some money to Linux+GNOME+KDE+etc they would save some money and also give funding.

Sure, I understand that people need money, I just think it’s a patch to a bigger issue that’s not solving anything, I don’t think we should be putting advertisement in the most unimaginable of places there are, it’s just sick.

I think it’s better to keeep the /c/communityaddress part so that only with reading the URL you can know where the discussion is taking place, also posts could be displayed with /p/ following how everything else is being displayed /c/, /u/. but I agree with you. It would be much better.

https://lemmy.ml/c/lemmy/p/Lemmy_URLs_should_be_human_meaningful

Beautiful.

Dolphin is alive somehow so I assume there’s a way to escape, also emulators are not illegal so fuck them.

We already discuss this one time but we didn’t come up with a good solution to Usonians posting news that only care to them as if they were world news so we didn’t add a rule, but the issue is definitely still there.

That’s when the US invades a country or commits a genocide as they always do and it affects other countries. Why should I give a fuck about the inefficacy of current policies in the US that don’t affect no one but themselves? Are Usonians so deep in their own shit that they want the rest of the world to always read about what happens to you?

Okay, but once I removed what do I do? Because otherwise I will have an OS without its kernel, which is not nice.

You are not the only Americans in the Americas, therefore you’re Usonians.

With what first? Keep in mind that since elementary is built upon Ubuntu LTS I can’t use the newest version of the Linux kernel because it hasn’t been tested and such, maybe I should post on elementary’s subreddit. :/

Low Disk Space on “boot”
So I've been trying to update/upgrade my system/applications for the last few days and it has been erroring, I ignored it and now when I try to `sudo apt upgrade` it tells me that I have "Low Disk Space on "boot" The volume "boot" has only 0 bytes disk space remaining." What happens when I run `sudo apt upgrade`: ``` user@user:~$ sudo apt upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Calculating upgrade... Done 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. 4 not fully installed or removed. After this operation, 0 B of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue? Anyone else thinks that “_” in community addresses should be gone?
In my opinion the only good thing it does is to create copies of already existing communities, so basically people tend to follow one community or the other and it divides the people who could be active. If you want to create a community that's similar to one and for some reason you don't want to be a part of it, find another name, if you can't find another name, create your own instance. So if Lemmy is federating now we could have /c/worldnews, /c/world_news, and the same applies to every other instance that decides to do the same. In my opinion this only segregates people. The same applies to uppercase letters, which Reddit uses but luckily Lemmy does not, imagine how many copies of a community could be created if you use both.

Best looking and most minimalist text editor?
So I've been trying to find a text editor that's blazing fast with as little features as possible that doesn't look like it was designed in the '90s. I would like something that when I click on my files it opens almost instantly and only displays text in a notepad without any buttons tools, or just the bare minimum (like create a new file or something like that). I want this to read .txt files and that's it, if I'm working on a writing I'd use LibreOffice and if I'm writing some code I'd use Atom.

Can we have a rule that prevents using the word “American/s” to refer to Usonians?
I understand some people may not even realize it's a word that puts yankees before all the rest of America, or that English didn't have a better word like Spanish (Estadounidense) and other languages do, but I feel that since this is a pretty big community and one where the word will be out there a lot could be an opportunity to help spread a better word that does not minimizes a lot of oppressed people.

Puzzle ELO on Lichess
Is there a havy puzzle doer over here? How does puzzle ELO compare to other categories in Lichess in your opinion? Because I suck at chess but I'm kinda good at puzzles. For example, I am 1900 on puzzle but 1100 on rapid and 900 on blitz.

List of libre software I would love to exist
##### Disclaimer: I know that being a developer is hard, I'm not trying to say that people should start doing these ideas to please my desires. I just thought it was fun to have a list of ideas that could improve the libre software community and these are some of them that I would really love to see. If you have some other Ideas contribute as well, and if you are a developer and you are looking for something to do but don't know what, you may gain some inspiration from here. ---- **Projects that do not exist:** - Libre and privacy respecting alternative to DeepL. *Details: I know there are already some libre translators, but I will not stop using DeepL until there's something as good as it.* - Libre and privacy respecting alternative to [Genius](https://genius.com/). *Details: It's a website where users create community based lyrics for their favourite artists and can create annotations and add metadata.* - ~~Libre and privacy respecting alternative to Goodreads. *Details: It's a website where you keep a log of what you've read, what you want to read and what you are reading, you can also rate books.*~~ [Here](https://github.com/mouse-reeve/bookwyrm) is an alternative. - Libre and privacy respecting alternative to Grammarly. *Details: It's a set of applications or add-ons that help you with typos and it will improve your text.* - Libre and privacy respecting alternative to Letterboxd. *Details: t's a website where you keep a log of what you've seen and what you want to see, you can also rate movies and TV shows.* - Libre and privacy respecting alternative to Pixabay. *Details: It's a website where you can get images to use without copyright restrictions. Look [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AItTqnTsVjA) video for more details since this is probably a really deep and hard to explain topic. [Here](https://github.com/Schneegans/Fly-Pie/) is an alternative for the radial menu. - Libre and privacy respecting website where to upload and download 3D models licensed under a CC. - Libre and privacy respecting website where to play a lot of different card games. *Details: Similar to Lichess. I am satisfied if you only can play poker until it gains some traction.* - Fully libre and privacy respecting alternative to [Xayn](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xayn.search&hl=en_US&gl=US). *Details: It's an application that recommends you articles based on the input you give to the algorithm. Some of its [code](https://github.com/xaynetwork/xaynet) it's liberated on GitHub, but not all of it.* - Libre , decentralized and privacy respecting alternative to Imgur. *Details: It would be great if this could work along the fediverse, for example people would host images there instead of here on Lemmy or Mastodon, making these platforms much more lightweight.* - Libre, privacy respecting and not self hostable visual bookmark manager. *Details: There are a few alternatives here and there, maybe, but they are really awful looking and generally you need to self host. I don't know how to self host and it would probably make my machine slower, I would prefer something that someone's alreay hosting. [This](https://github.com/Colllect/Colllect) is exactly like what I'm looking for, but they haven't launched it yet since they don have enough resources, it could die, too, maybe. ---- **Projects that exist but have some issues:** - A set of common android apps. *Details: I know there are a are a lot of basic Android applications to replace the default ones that come with your phone but I feel someone should create a set that align the aesthetics of them to be coherent with each other. I know Tibor Kaputa does this, but in my opinion I would like something that looks a bit more modern and that has more features, since theirs are based around minimalism. For example, the camera application does not have as many options as my default one, etc.* - Libre, privacy respecting, aesthetic and functional map application. *Details: I haven't been able to find a working application to see maps, I generally end up using DDG's in browser map because of this. The only one that worked was one calle Maps which was a fork of a really [good one](https://github.com/mapsme/omim) (but it was filled with proprietary and other [shady stuff](https://github.com/mapsme/omim/issues/85) ) but it stopped working after some time. I mention the aesthetic parts because I want to be able to recommend this to people who wouldn't use it otherwise if it looks like something really "primitive".* - Revive [waifu2x](https://github.com/nagadomi/waifu2x/) as a serious project. *Details: I really love this website, but I really hate the whole idea of the waifu thing, it is misogynous and I feel like unprofessional.* - Libre, privacy respecting and highly customizable home launcher. *Details: I know there are a ton of home launchers for Android, but most of them focus on minimalism or simplicity, I don't want that, I want a super customizable full of features application that can let me do almost anything. The closest to this was [Lawnchair](https://github.com/LawnchairLauncher/Lawnchair) which is dead, luckily [Omega](https://github.com/otakuhqz/Omega) launcher exists now and it looks like it'll be able to achieve this, but it's not there yet.* - Revive [AquaDroid](https://github.com/z3r0c00l-2k/AquaDroid) *Details: It is a really beautiful application but it has some bugs, not so many features and development has halted.*
