Which language should I learn to make a modern XMPP client?
Hi, I'm a complete useless lurker who do not know anything about programming, and I want to program an XMPP client :D. I have absolutely 0 competence, but I'd like to know if there is a language preferable to make such things, and if there is a place where I can start to learn. I tried with some basic tutorials and general lessons about programming, but without a clear goal I got bored and stopped after a little while. Thanks in advance for every advice/insult!

It’s really better to NOT start this discussion again, it always bring to flame. You just need to know that GrapheneOS is a good product and developers are really good at their job in maintaining it. And still calyx, lineage, and /e/ are great product too that a lot of people can safely and happily use. Just don’t follow internet drama and use what you want to use

It’s magic earth, a maps app

The only app is magic earth, a maps app. It has a great privacy policy, tho, and works very well. You can use whatever you want, of course

Mull + ublock on andvanced mode ftw. Mull is awesome, even if you need to change sometimes a thing or two from about:config (e.g. ocsp.require sadly broke a lot of websites), but the real feature is the ublock addon in advanced mode: if you learn how to use it (not hard, you can check the wiki on the official GitHub page or any guide on the internet) then you will have complete control on your traffic and a great protection against tracking and security issues. Tor is good too for everyday browsing, just use another browser for things that need an account

Disroot or riseup, ones of the best you can find, but please donate when you can

Chef-Koch is NOT a suitable mod. Please, he has a history of steal others works and be a total jerk during discussion. Don’t give this kind of power to a person who will abuse it. I know you are in a difficult time, but please keep attention to who you are giving mod’s power Edit: I’m stupid and thought this was “admin” privilege, sorry. I was terrified for a moment

“Untill you find a solution”. I never implied to shut down subscription forever, of course

So are those trolls that were not banned yesterday? Awesome

I only report posts (even if sometimes an error just appear) and don’t feed any troll, but this mess is unbelievable

Troll attack, again
This is horrible and terrible. Just suspend new subscription untill you find a way to address this thing. Now we have gore image too. Please just shut down new subscriptions for now, those trolls attacks are completely out of control

How the hell 4chan still exist

Pretty sure those are all alts of same person

Nextcloud encryption isn’t perfect, and you will lose some functionality (e.g. image preview). You could think about encrypting only what you think is particularly sensible, with something like cryptomator

It’s not easy as you may think, if you use a VPN, a secure router and follow common security practices for nextcloud, SSH and the like. If someone can access your server with those thing in place you would have a lot more to worry. IMHO a selfhosted nextcloud works better without encryption, without high risks. Of course if your threat model call for it, encrypt whatever you need, but common users are going to lose too much for nearly no gain

Nextcloud, but if you selfhost why do you need encryption?

Interesting, but I’d love to see what e.g. firefox + ublock can do

I don’t really like you, theanonymousjoker, but I despise madaidan and mikay as well, I followed your discussions in the age of the controversy between graphene/copper in nogoolag group (when it was still a semi-decent and not “conspirational” telegram group) and anyone of you were awful. BUT I think your privacy guide make sense to anyone who can’t or don’t want to buy a Google phone, and to anyone who don’t want or can’t root his phone. It was a good, democrat guide, and I appreciated his content, even if not his tone. This attack on reddit is awful, you don’t deserve this hate and I hope you are alright. Stay strong

What the hell happened in December?

Matrix/element should have that too, afaik

I hope it’s not too late, and I hope it will be effective. This is a really good thing

Maybe sarcasm can be subtle, but expression like “we’re back [common synonymous of sex-workers]” are often used not in an offensive way. And there still are a lot of contexts where I can choose to use a word to prove a point or talk about something. IMHO words shouldn’t be banned without context

I’m not a fan of slur filter. IMHO words aren’t the problem, the context is. I could use a word to describe a problem or to link a paper, in a sarcastic way, as a slang, or to make examples for something else. I don’t think just banning some words will solve any problem, this should at least be opt-out, and I really think a different way to check for offensive content need to be found.

Anyway: keep up the good work! Lemmy seems an awesome project and I really hope this will grow
