I know I’m going to get downvoted for this, but millions of americans go to school, church, concerts, etc, and have no worries whatsoever about getting shot because the statistical probability of that happening is so low that the average American is extremely more likely to die from preventable diseases caused by poor diets or even choking on food than to die in a mass shooting. Yet despite this being the case, people tend to heavily focus conversation on mass shootings rather than poor diets because of the inherent shock value mass shootings have in the public conscious than someone they personally know that dies from heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes, etc.

Why isn’t there a larger focus on things that make a population sick rather than tools that allow a population to defend themselves? 🤔

If you ever have to switch to using a smart phone again, one thing that might help is making the screen monochrome in the android developer options. Removing the colors from the screen makes our ape brains not get as excited and more focused on tasks. It also works on desktops.

I wonder if Fedora having a simple checkbox upon first login to enable RPM fusion, nvidia drivers, and codecs would be considered to be going against its free software policy. They would technically be shipping only free software be default and in their own repos if users only had to check a couple of checkboxes after installation to enable some common non-free software.

Depending on your preferred desktop environment they may have the best implementation of it. Ubuntu MATE is to MATE what Fedora is to GNOME, you’re not going to find a MATE experience half as good anywhere else. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same was true for lxqt or something.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that Fedora tries to ship packages that are more vanilla than standard Ubuntu packages. If the experience on Ubuntu MATE is better than the Fedora MATE/Compiz spin, then perhaps that is the fault of both Ubuntu MATE for going against the spirit of free software by not pushing their changes upstream and maybe even the fault of the MATE desktop developers themselves for not trying to request those changes be pushed upstream.

What is the use case for doing this compared to just using a different distro with newer packages? Fedora is very nearly as well supported for most software but has newer packages than Ubuntu while also innovating by including newer technologies first. With also Ubuntu pushing Snaps heavily as well makes me question why anybody runs Ubuntu at all anymore when better distros exist.

I went on a police ride along back in high school for extra class credit and the police officer told me the the neighboring city’s police force frequently takes homeless from that city and moves them to the other city lying to them in the process telling them that “the (other city) police department has all the help you need, just walk in there and they will help you.”

Take a topic that you know. Something related to your field of work, or your special interest, whatever. Now watch a news video about that topic and notice how laughably wrong they get even basic details. Most people can relate to how wrong the media gets on a topic they’re intimately familiar with but then also think they get topics right when talking about other things like world affairs.

We need some kind of resource that has a categorized list of companies that don’t advertise and vote with out wallet by purchasing goods and services directly from these companies.

Public restrooms and safe injection rooms are a good start; here it seems to work.

I am happy to hear that it those solutions work in your area, but I have also have vivid memories of seeing a homeless man shitting 15ft away from a public restroom that was clean and accessible. Not to mention how filthy restrooms visited by the homeless are. Obviously not saying that more public restrooms aren’t worth building, just saying that sometimes solutions are unfortunately more nuanced than just throwing more money for public services.

That would be very interesting to research. From my experience talking with them directly, they seem to be more nomadic whereas people that are homeless through no fault of their own will tend to stay in the city they grew up it, or became homeless in.

I meant to say that its strange that you guys decided to fork the OpenBSD kernel instead of just using Linux-libre. I’ve quietly followed Hyperbola and HyperbolaBSD for a while now and I must say that I don’t fully understand the reasoning for hard forking the OpenBSD kernel despite reading the explanations on the website as to why. In your eyes, are the rest of the Linux distros that are endorsed by the free software foundation somewhat “tainted” now for the same reasons you announced why you’re hard forking the Openbsd kernel? Is Stallman himself wrong for using the Linux kernel?

Also, HyperbolaBSD was announced in Dec 2019, almost a year and 2 months ago, and most of what seems to be done has been reusing existing code from LibertyBSD. Progress on HyperbolaBSD seems so very very slow to the point of me questioning if it would be best to focus efforts on just contributing to existing software projects like the software on the fsf high priority list

Facebook and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

Its far better to have as much of an “Upstream first” mentality as possible. The more Linux distros cause unnecessary fragmentation, the more we will see duplication of effort which reduced the quality of software for everyone.

Does the desktop version also have local connectivity through bluetooth or local wifi like the android app? Might be interesting to use at a base station to facilitate communication between multiple points in a line of sight wifi network… but then I guess you could just setup an XMPP or Matrix server to accomplish the same thing, I guess. Always liked Briar though.

We need an organization like the fsf that has a hardline stance on free software because if we don’t, we will end up in a world where free software advocates will be saying things like the above paragraph. A world where no software freedom exists because we forgot to teach our own children why software freedom is important.

But at the same time, I understand the sentiment the author has regarding the practical use of free software in the modern world. If someone could only be “truly free” if they ran outdated hardware, that would seal the tomb on the free software movement leading into the future. Free software advocates would be forced to be kept in the past with zero relevance going forward.

The more organizations promoting free software like the Free Software Foundation and Software Freedom Conservancy the better off the world will be.

In one way, it could be argued that this has a positive side to it. As more people consider Linux adoption, malware authors are noticing that and determining that it is worth their time to write a linux version of their malware.

More sources is always better to increase the reach of these technologies. We need to flood the internet with projects like this to make privacy more mainstream.

So it sounds like that only applies to open wifi access points and Windows machines automatically connecting to them. Perhaps _optout doesn’t actually matter if you’re using wifi encryption (which you should be). Interesting… I’d like to know where I got the idea that it included bing maps cars…
