Commune makes secure and decentralized communication a breeze. Built on top of Matrix, Commune unifies chat, email and forums into one powerful tool. Commune is easy to self-host, giving you complete control over your data.
I’ve read through the license and although it is weird as hell it allows everything except the commercial use, at least that was my understanding since I don’t know Legalese very well.
“Everything except the commercial use” means it does not meet the definitions of Open Source or Free Software and therefore is offtopic in this sub. I wonder if the non-commercial license choice has to do with the fact that one of the developers works for Discord?
Also, it appears that they’ve somehow made a Matrix client+server that currently doesn’t federate? (That is on their roadmap, but it is an unchecked box currently. Also unchecked is the box for e2e encryption.)
Yeah, I also found the license really weird, what’s weirder is that the license’s web site is hosted on WordPress, not the most professional of tactics.
Forums + chat is the way these applications will rise in use. Chat is just too slow for when there are few people, and forums will bring more people interested on the topic in.
I may not be seeing it, but it talks about unification, but more in the continent of replacing them with a chat interface? Their git repository nor their site isn’t making me wiser.
It’s not okay to pretend your software is open source (Drew DeVault, 2018)

It does but I don’t get why
I love how every chat service now clones Discord’s UI.
it is a pretty great ui though
Looks interesting, but the license is strange and likely not FOSS.

It looks cool, but their license is really weird.
Anyone with experience know whether it’s easier to admin?
It’s not released yet.
