I would mostly agree. However, there are exceptions and customizing suckless’ simple terminal (or st) is one of them. Last time I used it - which was about 5 years ago, granted - st didn’t have a config file. If you wanted to change even the most trivial things such as fonts, colours, etc., you had to edit the code. As an example, here’s a patch if one wanted to use the solarized colour scheme in st:

In these few instances, the article actually is helpful, since the user would have to compile the application from source.

Honestly? I’m surprised it held out as long as it did. When you have to jump through hoops just to get commonplace applications like GIMP or Firefox installed, then your distro has a problem.

…is this about Linus’ stupid tweet? Because no, using adblocker is not piracy. How would it be? All adblockers do is, wouldn’t you know it, block ads. They don’t illegally copy data.

But it is, in fact, incorrect. Square brackets go first for the name, and then regular brackets for the URL. It’s easy to get them mixed up, though.

I have Dino installed on my PC, I like it. I wanted to install a XMPP client with OMEMO support and it was a toss-up between Dino and Gajim. Dino won out in the end, because it had fewer dependencies. One thing it doesn’t do well (yet?) is chat history. If you’re chatting on another app, like Conversations, and Dino isn’t open at the time, you won’t see the chat history when you open Dino up again.

As for the other questions: I guess never. All of my chat buddies are techies and know what XMPP is. No idea what an average user would think.

I would say that depends on what client you’re using, rather than the chat protocol itself. You have intuitive and less-than-intuitive apps for both protocols.

The page on how to configure JShelter just says TODO. I think I’ll wait at least until this page is filled out. Project seems cool, though.

For facebook alternative I’ll say #Minds is the most mature but the problem there is lack of moderation and is home for many conspiracy theorists.

Adding to this, Minds also rewards their users with Ethereum, based on their interactions with the website. Very much not a fan of this. This encourages their users to post as much as possible for the sake of earning money, which results in a flood of posts, most of which are of low quality.

On another note, how is this a facebook alternative? Look at their discovery page and tell me what platform this reminds you of.

The title is a bit off, I think. It implies that Mozilla’s climate policy review is over and done, but as far as I can see, the review is still ongoing. The situation is still the same as last week when this whole kerfuffle blew up: Mozilla has paused cryptocurrency donations and is currently reviewing the impact cryptos have on the world’s climate.

Was about to ask the same. There are quite a few articles on the topic, but all of them are marketing fluff.

That tracks. When 8 came out, people stuck with 7. When Vista came out, people stuck with XP. When ME came out, people stuck with Win98 (and some on Win2k). I imagine this will be much the same.

I liked the video. Like @marmulak said wanting every Windows game to work on an OS that is clearly unsupported strikes me as an odd approach, but whatever, to each their own. In fact, I find it amazing that Linux is now able to run as many games as it does. This was not the case a few years back. All in all, I’m hopeful for the future as far as Linux games are concerned.

One nitpick, though. That tweet by Ben Golus saying that they would skip Linux next time because of how many errors Linux users generate. He was full of shit. There was also the Titans fiasco, so yeah. Ben Golus and Uber Entertainment should have zero credibility at this point.

That’s sad news. I don’t use Solus anymore, but I really liked it when I did. That’s the second lead gone from the Solus project. What’s going on over there?

We usually prefer getting these legal threats in physical form but we are aware of the skillset your company lacks in order to get physical letters delivered to it’s destination.

Holy shit, Njalla came out swinging right out of the gate.

Feelings of inadequacy? Signal also has a crypto integrated into the app called MobileCoin, which is a Monero fork. I agree, though. Nobody asked for integrated crypto in their chat app and that goes for both Molly and Signal.

If you use GitHub, consider SourceHut or Codeberg. If you use Twitter, consider Mastodon instead. If you use YouTube, try PeerTube. If you use Facebook… don’t.

That last bit gave me a chuckle :D

Yeah, there were some facepalm-worthy moments in the video, but that (now fixed) error Linus got when he tried to install Steam? That one was on Pop!_OS. Seriously, all he did was open up the software manager, find steam and click the install button.

Clumsy wording. This particular German state will try to make the switch for the first time, not again. “Another German state will try and replace Microsoft Office with LibreOffice” would have been better, I think.

Oh, there absolutely is a need.

Easy. Join a server like Libera Chat and if you wanted to create a room called randoom you would type in “/join randoom”, without quotes of course. And if the channel name isn’t taken, then that’s it! If not, you need to try again by using a different room name.
