No such thing as a 12GB stick. You could start with adding an 8GB, then in the future replace the 4 with another 8. (Assuming it’s not 2+2 in there currently).

It’s an excellent pasta. Everything holds.

One day Debian will finally quietly supply HURD as the default kernel and the pasta will still hold.

Fuck yeah. This is the way. Been doing this since I came to the installation step of “install a display manager” and wondered “why?”

Progressive Web Apps” with “Add to Home Screen” is the tech make this happen I think?

Notifications are supported.

Sharing intents can be registered via web share target, which I think is supported by chromium but not yet by Firefox.

Just combine the lot and do coffee in oat milk cappuccino. Or oaty coffee and a muesli bar with all the exciting things.

I’m a big fan of good cow milk, but I’ll choose oat milk half the time with coffee – because it tastes good together. Try all the oat milks until you find a good one.

For some time I’ve been wondering if, in the context of low-effort system maintenance, the occasional breakage in a rolling distro like Archlinux or Gentoo (with an auto-update cron job even!) is a lower impact×risk than attempting a set&forget Ubuntu/Debian/CentOS 10-year LTS install.

Server and desktop(someone else’s, which you support) alike.

Gnocchi. Potatoes take a while to cook, but then just add flour and egg, roll, shape, boil, toss in sauce. It could take hours and be a disaster if you’re new to it, but 20 mins from cooked potatoes once you’re good. Get a potato ricer.

Pizza. Flour+water+yeast+salt, tinned tomatoes + salt + pepper + olive oil + herbs + whatever, shape+bake. Under an hour from hunger to plate, once you’ve got your process down.

If you really like routinely building core packages in your system from source, use Gentoo. It’s a distro made for building everything from source, so is one of the best set up for the risks that entails.

This is definitely the incorrect way to install most software. Use your package manager. At least use a community repository or build system if you have to.

Ha. Pipe some random URLs to a root shell while you’re at it. /c/whatcouldgowrong

In English at least, the algorithms considered socially problematic can be more precisely as “The Algorithm” — capitalised to hint the more specific meaning. But to understand the hint you already need to know the context of the broader conversation around corporate-interest-oriented algorithms.

So, we have an obscure inexplicit grammar that only makes sense if you already know what it means. Not great for bringing new people to the conversation.

…until Intel, AMD, and Arm build nft rights-verification into the CPU.

!remindme +15 years?

Yeah. Conversations.im and its sibling quicksy.im (as service+app bundles) are fine for android but not iOS unless you can assist with setup.

Snikket is an effort to create a deployable service+app bundle using a relabelled conversations app on android, something else on iOS, to the end user all appearing as preconfigured coherent bundle. They have plans for whitelabel hosting.

Not sure what snikket has planned for desktop - there’s some promising browser based xmpp clients in development.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet used to be the thing before forums took over. Every decent ISP would host a news server for their users.

As a user, you’d dial in, sync your newsreader software, and later whenever you want you can go through all the threads in the groups you’re subscribed to and respond at your leisure. Your posts go out next time you sync up.

Compare this to Signal, where you saw everyone’s phone number and it was buggy as hell

In order to remotely help family and friends with iOS devices get a decent xmpp app up and running, I put together a few screenshots of the settings one needs to check after setting up an account in Siskin. Frustrating that these need to be checked (including "enabling" the just-set-up account!), but once these setting are in place it all seemed to just work ...after restarting the iPhone (the good old "turn it off and on again"). Delivery is prompt, and voice and video calls between Conversations and Siskin work great too! It's pretty rough, but I don't really have access to iOS devices so it's the best I've got.
