President Joe Biden said Monday that the United States would intervene militarily if China attempts to take Taiwan by force, a warning that appeared to deviate from the deliberate ambiguity traditionally held by Washington.

The president confirmed Washington would use force during his first trip to Japan, saying “that’s the commitment we made.”

The US has been supplying weapons to Taiwan since 1979, with the Biden admin continuing that in a mega deal confirmed last August.
